Where was everybody?

This time of year on the North Shore often feels like a ghost town when it comes to spotting fellow steelheaders.  Over the years I have found that once the Month of May hits anglers simply are not out like they are during the first April push of fish, or in this crazy spring - March push.  Still trying to figure this out.  Maybe people are discouraged from the news of poor creel reports or the perceived lack of water.  Based on experience and following flow and run charts, yes the same charts we link and post here, this time of year can be a steelheader's dream.

Maybe anglers think steelhead are like the smelt run,  within a few days it is done.  This is so far from the truth!  If fact, if the weather pattern stays the same along the North Shore this spring, I bet a few fish will still be around Memorial weekend.  That is well over 2 months of steelhead action!  Sure they are harder to find than standing in the lagoon on the Sucker River during the 2nd week in April, but fishing for active steelhead, in warmer water, without frozen fingers, is a pretty neat and rewarding experience.

Pictured here is a 29" buck caught on an upper shore river on the mid morning of May 5th.  He was caught in some nice 49°f pocket water on a 43°f overcast morning. This spot looked too good to quite  and subsequently gave up 3 more fish out of this little 14' pocket.  These were not lethargic fish either I might add. All nice steelies!

For those that will read this in the future, the 2012 season was a few weeks earlier this year due to an unseasonable dry and warm winter. In fact in my 30 years on the water this is the earliest spring run that I can remember.  More of a reason the average Joe would not expect to catch fish this late.  Do not under estimate the late season my friends and keep an eye on the flow and run charts.

Actually, next year will be “more than 30 years”. For clarity, I stated “30 years” not “more than” as you noted. No sweat though, easy mistake. Like you I’m sure, not a big fan of guys who BS. To further clarify, I started when I was 17, in 1982. Simple math pretty much and you come up with, yep, 30 years.

Shorecasting the North Shore

Shore casting the North Shore of Lake Superior can at times appear to be a daunting task, it is, however, an enjoyable and very effective way to fish the big lake.  River mouths Most of us have seen the numerous fishermen lining the banks near the French or Lester rivers. Why? Because these are consistently good places to fish. A beginning shore caster would be smart to start their quest fishing river mouths, particularly early in the season when steelhead, Kamloops and lakers can be found in abundance. The river plumes provide warm water and a steady flow of bugs which fish like. Due to the fairly shallow water found at most mouths, it’s best to fish them in low light. Target these areas early in the morning and late in the evening or on a dreary overcast day. You will be less noticeable to the fish and they will be less apt to spook.  Seeing how there are over 25 potential stream/river mouths to fish it would be crazy to ignore these great areas. Pom-Pom Eggs - The Inexpensive Glo-Bug

One of the most useful and productive fly patterns you can carry when you fish the runs for steelhead, kamloops and salmon are eggs. Any time free drifting eggs are in the stream is a good time to fish them and, they can be fished with any type of equipment from Fly to Spinning rods. A wise SE Wisconsin guide once told me, "Any pattern will catch fish, as long as it has an egg in it." As with all flies, you will go through A LOT of them. One option is to purchase them, but at a dollar a pop or more, making your own is a simple and inexpensive proposition. In a short amount of time and with just a few simple tools, you can crank out eggs by the hundreds at just pennies per piece.
