FISHING REPORT: 4/8 - 4/14

Winter is Back!

Cold, Ice and, more cold. Until we get a warm spell, the fishing is going to be tough. Kudos to all those out braving the elements. Most anglers we spotted were fishing at the river Mouths.

The forecast does not look like it will warm up all week. In the two Harbors area, Friday is the first day forecasted with above freezing temps. The long range forecasting models show next Monday approaching normal temps. Lets hope!

4/13: The fishing pressure has been lighter than usual for this time of the year. However, weekend fishing should be picking up as long as the weather continues to warm. Be prepared for some ice. We have reports that several of the lower shore rivers are still locked up with a bit of ice. We have also been informed that most of the upper shore rivers are still locked up with ice.

Does anyone know what sort of flow is on the lower rivers? Sucker and Knife to be more exact.

I'm headed up there this weekend. I'll post up and let you know. I expect it to be VERY fishable.

Knife was rising all weekend but the water was very muddy and COLD! Very, very few fish caught.

Lots and lots of anglers and pressure. No fish above the weir yet as of this past weekend.

DNR Caught 10 Steelhead at the Knife Weir as of today. Don't know the water conditions today. Temps are still down though. Don't expect to see to much happen until we start seeing water temps in the low 40s.

Pom-Pom Eggs - The Inexpensive Glo-Bug

One of the most useful and productive fly patterns you can carry when you fish the runs for steelhead, kamloops and salmon are eggs. Any time free drifting eggs are in the stream is a good time to fish them and, they can be fished with any type of equipment from Fly to Spinning rods. A wise SE Wisconsin guide once told me, "Any pattern will catch fish, as long as it has an egg in it." As with all flies, you will go through A LOT of them. One option is to purchase them, but at a dollar a pop or more, making your own is a simple and inexpensive proposition. No Treble Hooks!

 Years ago all an angler had was a paper regulation booklet and the word from fellow anglers and DNR officials stating that treble hooks are not allowed in our north shore tributaries below the posted boundaries.  This should be enough, right? Today we still have those regulation booklets and honestly they have come a long way in clarifying the dos and don'ts regarding our north shore fishery.  We also have dozens of signs along our rivers explaining the dos and don't as well as specifically stating the use of treble hooks. If that was not enough, anglers can simply search the internet.  Heck, these days, you can search stream side right from your phone.  In fact this post will be available streamside to anyone willing to take the time to search the web or scan the UR code from our report cards that went out this spring.
