This is a great night of insight, beer tasting, and camaraderie.

 This seminar is for new and seasoned anglers alike interested in learning about our North Shore steelhead fishery and an opportunity to indulge in some award-winning beer. The seminar covers what it takes to become a successful steelhead angler and is full of beautiful photography and priceless steelhead water. The Seminar is presented by our friend and renowned steelhead angler & guide, Carl Haensel.


 A little about our Speaker: Carl Haensel is an educator, biologist, photographer, writer and fishing guide. He has guided and taught fly fishing since 1996 and has authored over a hundred articles on fly fishing techniques, tips, flies and locations as well as children’s educational literature. From 1996 until 2003 he owned and operated Around the Bend Flyfishing based in Eden Prairie, MN. From 2001 until 2007 he served as a regional manager for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Fish and Boat Commission. There he managed education, programming, and aquatic resource issues for an area encompassing over five million people, including the City of Philadelphia. He has fished extensively throughout the Americas and his outdoor photographs have been widely published. He is also an educational consultant and enjoys secondary and post-secondary teaching.  Along with Jade Thomason, they manage the Great Waters Fly Fishing expo on behalf of Minnesota Trout Unlimited.  Carl serves as the Northern Minnesota Vice-Chair for Trout Unlimited.
There will be time before & after the presentation for one-on-one questions with Carl, MN Steelheader Staff, and a guide or two.  Social time, questions, and relaxed beer drinking will go until 9pm.

7:00pm- 8:00pm: Steelhead Seminar ~ Carl Haensel

8:00pm- 9:00pm: Chat with MNST staff, Carl, and guides

There will be seminar specials on tap beer, root beer for the kids, and food available by our friends at the Brick Oven Bus food truck.



We expect to reach taproom capacity so make sure you register for this event. If you register and find yourself unable to attend, please cancel so those on our waiting list can attend.

If registration is full, please register anyway and get on the waiting list. There are always cancelations. This is a free event.

Shorecasting the North Shore

Shore casting the North Shore of Lake Superior can at times appear to be a daunting task, it is, however, an enjoyable and very effective way to fish the big lake.  River mouths Most of us have seen the numerous fishermen lining the banks near the French or Lester rivers. Why? Because these are consistently good places to fish. A beginning shore caster would be smart to start their quest fishing river mouths, particularly early in the season when steelhead, Kamloops and lakers can be found in abundance. The river plumes provide warm water and a steady flow of bugs which fish like. Due to the fairly shallow water found at most mouths, it’s best to fish them in low light. Target these areas early in the morning and late in the evening or on a dreary overcast day. You will be less noticeable to the fish and they will be less apt to spook.  Seeing how there are over 25 potential stream/river mouths to fish it would be crazy to ignore these great areas. Pom-Pom Eggs - The Inexpensive Glo-Bug

One of the most useful and productive fly patterns you can carry when you fish the runs for steelhead, kamloops and salmon are eggs. Any time free drifting eggs are in the stream is a good time to fish them and, they can be fished with any type of equipment from Fly to Spinning rods. A wise SE Wisconsin guide once told me, "Any pattern will catch fish, as long as it has an egg in it." As with all flies, you will go through A LOT of them. One option is to purchase them, but at a dollar a pop or more, making your own is a simple and inexpensive proposition. In a short amount of time and with just a few simple tools, you can crank out eggs by the hundreds at just pennies per piece.
